Zippy and i were walking through the neighborhood when Howard invited me to gather some lettuce from his garden! Howard and I met formally at my "Welcome to Lake Walker Party", though we have been smiling, waving and exchanging hellos since I moved in. He often sits on his front porch and we see him on our walks.
On the way to the garden we walked through his warm and welcoming home, where I met his calico cat and his McCaw named Babe Ruth. He is an avid baseball fan! Love having our passion for Orioles in common! Howard's back yard is a delight! Everything is pristine and artfully arranged, an in town oasis, as are most back yards in Lake Walker! He has a fish pond filled with coy; garden beds, traditional and others raised for vertical gardening. HIs placement of plants is pure artistry! He had five kinds of lettuce including oak leaf and red, with springs of dill growing through out, and handed me a bag to help myself! I gathered a variety, thanked him warmly and headed for the door. "Do you like radishes," he asked as an after thought. "Oh, I love them!" He opened the refrigerator and pulled out a bag filled with radishes of the most lovely colors - reds, pinks, purples and whites. They reminded me of a painting I did years ago when I found Easter Egg radishes at the Fresh Market in Towson. I've written about radishes in two of my e-books and on this site which is filled with hidden treasures. And what can better exemplify a hidden treasure than the jewel colored radishes buried in spring's rich earth? Comments are closed.
